Buying a TV?

Sales people and retailers are ONLY interested in selling so don't ask
them, use some common sense – any non-digital TV will stop working in
a year unless you also invest in a special converter. Bet there isn't
a sign warning you about this in your favorite store.

Does Anyone Still Answer Their Phone?

Today I did my weekly cleanup of phone messages. I change my phone number every two years but the nonsense calls build up to an intolerable level after about 14 months. Today there were 27 saved messages from unanswered calls, some from humans (sort of), a couple from someone speaking Hindustani, and some from computers, all from three companies selling things I would never buy. I live in the country and we know what to do with door-to-door salesmen. Between large hungry dogs and shotguns paired with a backhoe. If I ever answered one of these calls I would still be cursing the caller as my BP went up and up so I never, NEVER answer my phone. There were 7 non sales calls, all from my insurance company, UPMC which is a great insurance plan EXCEPT FOR THE VOLUME OF NONSENSE CALLS they force on me almost daily. Shake, Rattle, and Roll, is Iceland About to Blow Its Top?

 More than 10,000 what their geologists are calling micro-quakes have been keeping Icelanders in the vicinity of Reykjavik awak. Of course everyone knows that Iceland is very geologically active hence all the geothermal power not to mention the vast lava fields, but the country has never in recorded human history seen this level of activity. Geologists in Iceland and elsewhere say it is just a matter of time before there is a major eruption but the quakes seem to be centered on an area near the capital and that is an area of previous slow lava flows more like you see in Hawaii than like Vesuvius. Although these are being described as microquakes, many are in the range of 3.8 to 4.5 and even higher - as high as 5.7, enough to shake vehicles and easily enough to wake people. The southwest of Iceland has been volcanically quiet for 800+ years but the 18,000 recent quakes have people expecting an eruption - not necessarily frightened, but certainly on edge since they can't get a night...

Why I dropped Science (the magazine) because of the extreme censorship imposed

 Some have asked me why I am not  renewing Science since their extreme censorship of the  discussion groups is unrelated. This is the same organization so I now have some questions about how they approach filtering the science they publish in Science, my real reason for not paying even my discounted retired, elderly rate, the money goes to the people who developed AND enforce the censorship and I decline to support meaningless censorship in any way. Other comments/thoughts, welcome. Greetings to my visitors from the UAE and Brazil. (although Google Analytics does NOT track identities or even IPs of visitors, it does try to indicate the geographic location of  visitors.)
